What is an entrepreneur’s favorite space? Their home office! However, if you’re like most entrepreneurs, you don’t have an interior design background and might feel your office needs improvement.
The following steps will help to guide any entrepreneur in making their home office more beautiful and have impactful design elements:
1) Designers recommend first assessing what kind of work your business requires for its employees. Do you require workstations, private offices or collaborative work areas? Evaluate your business needs and decide on the space type that will enhance productivity.
2) If you’re starting a new business, are the current business finances adequate to cover the costs of design? It may be beneficial to strategically plan for a new office or large remodel if you’re looking to attract more clients. However, start-ups can still design their workspace in order to be more productive with what they have. Try adding a splash of color and masking off open storage areas with workstations to give a clean appearance even though furniture may not be there.
3) The next step is to determine if you will be using a professional interior designer, or if you’ll be designing it yourself. Having a professional designer can improve overall office aesthetics by ensuring successful elements such as lighting, layout and color schemes are properly implemented. A business owner’s home office is their personal space and is not always ideal for corporate use or public access. In some cases, clients may not want to take the time to make their office feel like something clients would enjoy coming into and hence the need for professional design services.
4) The next step for business owners is to decide on furniture and equipment choices. If you’re looking to have your office look more corporate, think about adding professional furniture such as ergonomic chairs and a large conference table. Color schemes will also help to give an office a feel of professionalism. Consider opting for black or white to mask the overall color scheme and leave the business name up in lights.
5) Clearly define work flow between employees and create an area that fits your style and comfort level as well as encourages creativity. By defining your work flow, you can maximize productivity in the space and be more confident in encouraging employees to bring their ideas to life.
As contractors we need to make sure that our clients are going to be happy not only with our work but also about how it’s going to make them feel. Being able to create spaces that will allow the business owner to focus on what they do best and that is their business, is important for any contractor’s success. However, if this client is delayed or not there when your crew shows up, things can turn quickly from good expectations into bad results so it’s important for us as contractors as we design our clients’ offices.
If you are a contractor, the next thing to look at is how to design your office. As a contractor you need to make sure that the space you design is going to work for who your client is and what they have in their business. In other words, if you’re planning on doing an assessment, remember the normal way is for all the furniture in an office to be placed around a common desk area which often look like this. They are called cubes and people sit on their own desk and there’s usually no storage space and they sit with their back or side turned towards other desks which can be considered bad ergonomics by some people.
The good thing about this office design is that it’s also very easy to fix. You can sit at one desk, you can lay out your drawers, you can turn your chair around, you can move all the desks around into a little circle and there is no big storage area so that means that storage space is right there in the room and that’s actually a very attractive thing for people who have a lot of stuff they keep all over their work area. They can choose to either use little filing cubby holes for the stuff that they want to keep up but out of their way or if they’re not actually getting back to that stuff often, they can just store it in some big cabinets in the room.
The other thing about this office design is that because it’s an open office, there is a lot of social interaction. This is a good thing as well as a bad thing. If people are working on something and they need information from somebody else which might be across the room or somewhere else, it’s easy enough to get up and go ask that person for whatever information you need so that conversation takes place. There is an exchange of ideas and that kind of thing and so part of this is good, part is bad.
The other thing to notice about this office design is that there are no private offices. Every single person in this office works in the same type of space. The only difference between somebody’s desk and everybody else’s desk is the way their computer monitor or computer screen is placed, their phone volume and maybe the colors they choose to paint their wall or put up posters or pictures on their wall. Other than those three things, everybody looks the same.
Large private offices are becoming increasingly rare in today’s working culture. This can be attributed to the increase in open floor plan office layouts, which allow for more interaction between employees and promote productivity through collaboration. Studies have shown that the biggest predictor to employee satisfaction isn’t salary, or vacation time, or even flexibility in setting hours, but simple access to natural light. It is important for a business owner to determine what kind of office design fits their business culture and best enables collaboration.
Open offices originally became popular at the turn of the 20th century as a way for businesses to put employees under one roof and save on real estate costs. They gained traction again in the 1960s and 1970s when European companies began implementing them as a way to reduce costs of in-house physical office space. Nowadays, one might think that open offices are all the rage, but they are not without faults.
There are many benefits to an open office plan: it is easier and cheaper to build, less expensive to heat and cool and it provides employees with a more collaborative work environment. However, there are also downsides: no privacy or quiet working space, noise distraction and a lack of identity for employees. In an open office plan employees have an un-private office space with shared resources such as printers, scanners, copy machines. This means that when a work day is over employees must shut down their computer and gather all their belongings in order to close out the space and regain privacy. The lack of privacy not only affects employee productivity but also increases distractions which can hinder professional development.
Although open office spaces have been proven to be more productive than private offices, some research suggests that open offices may actually lead to greater employee dissatisfaction. A study published in the “Journal of Applied Psychology” examined factors such as productivity, satisfaction, job performance, and turnover for both private and open office workers. The result? Despite the similar amount of work output between both groups, private offices resulted in higher job satisfaction among the employees because of its better control over privacy and quietness.
